Background of the Study
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is an innovative approach to network management that decouples the control plane from the data plane, allowing network administrators to manage the network dynamically and programmatically. This paradigm shift enables more efficient network management by centralizing control and simplifying network configurations. In academic institutions like Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State, SDN offers significant advantages, including improved network flexibility, scalability, and security (Ahmed et al., 2024).
With the increasing demand for bandwidth and the growing complexity of university networks, SDN provides an effective solution for managing diverse and dynamic network traffic. SDN allows for real-time network monitoring and adjustments, automating network responses to changing conditions, and improving overall network performance. By using a centralized controller, SDN facilitates rapid provisioning of network services, which is essential for universities that support a variety of academic and administrative applications.
This study will explore the benefits of implementing Software-Defined Networking (SDN) at Federal University, Wukari, to improve network efficiency and support the university’s expanding digital needs.

Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Wukari, faces challenges related to managing its growing and increasingly complex network infrastructure. Traditional network management methods are inefficient in handling dynamic traffic demands and optimizing network resources. The adoption of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) could offer a more flexible and efficient approach to managing the university’s network.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the current network management practices at Federal University, Wukari.

  2. To explore the benefits of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) in managing university networks.

  3. To propose an SDN architecture for Federal University, Wukari to improve network performance, scalability, and flexibility.

Research Questions

  1. What are the current challenges faced by Federal University, Wukari in managing its network infrastructure?

  2. How can Software-Defined Networking (SDN) enhance the management and performance of the university’s network?

  3. What are the key benefits of implementing SDN at Federal University, Wukari?

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on exploring the implementation of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) within the network infrastructure of Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State. The limitations include focusing on network management within the campus and excluding off-campus networks or external service providers.

Definitions of Terms

  • Software-Defined Networking (SDN): A network architecture approach that separates the control plane from the data plane to enable centralized, programmable network management.

  • Network Scalability: The ability of a network to accommodate increasing traffic or more devices without compromising performance.

  • Control Plane: The part of the network responsible for making decisions about how traffic should be forwarded.

  • Data Plane: The part of the network responsible for forwarding the actual network traffic based on the decisions made by the control plane.
